San Diego is a great city for dating after all.
I did a mini-dating-calling-watching a Deep Space Nine marathon- thing with a music critic once. He was kind of a tool (hey, to each his own. He ended up falling in love with this really nice girl who had a lot of tattoos and they had a baby, probably full of really good music with little to no guitar riffs) and spent a lot of time telling me why 1. Dave Matthews ruled and 2. Metallica was riff heavy and relied on the same old formula for all their work, although Nothing Else Matters was okay.
I started making it in to a game, what negative thing is he going to say about (insert Band Name Here) and how long until he worked in how great Dave Matthews is? This was my favorite "I'm bored and we're stuck in traffic" game.
One day he turned to me and said "Well, what do YOU think about Lauryn Hills new acoustic album?"
"It's okay."
"That's it?"
"Yep, it's okay. I'd like to hear the story behind some of the songs. And I wonder how she feels about the critical backlash for her acoustic stylings. Ooo, and if she's going to do another tour. I saw her last tour and she was awesome, that Zion song was really cool and Carlos Santana was there. AND Busta Rhymes..."
"But what do you think about the music? How did you think it sounded and were the lyrics identifiable? I found them a bit self aware and indistinguishable from several other acoustic CD sets."
"It...was...okay."
The great difference between the music critic and the normal person (and like I said, he did live happily ever after).
And here, over on Sign on San Diego's STREET blog (which I read a lot, you should check it out too) we are once again facing the great "music critic" VS "normal people" debate.
I'm finding it amusing. It's a tough job (and just one persons opinion) to critique someones heartfelt effort in to the world of art (music, painting, writing) and it's even TOUGHER to do it on a BLOG where the attention span of a reader tends to reach somewhere between "I've already fast forwarded to live TV on my DVR so let's waste time during the commercials" and "I don't feel like typing numbers into this spreadsheet so lets get on the net real quick."
People are starting to get a little personal though (check the comments)... small man syndrome... ha ha ha.
