This one time at The Turquoise I spotted Anya Marina sitting at a table and I went a little Chris Farley in that sketch where he talks to famous people and basically makes a fool of himself. Our short (very short) interaction went something like this:
"Oh my God you're Anya Marina, I totally saw you play at Lestat's once and it was really good. I loved your music, and I thought you were so good."
"Hi, it's nice to meet you."
"And you played this one song about this girl's pants or something. And you played a version of Over the Rainbow and you did a really great cover of an Eric Clapton song, Layla."
"I did? I don't remember that."
"You did! I was there. You were so good."
"Well thank you." She looks at her friends and sort of gives them the 'make sure you protect me if she tries to lunge at me or goes all stalker.'
"I think you're so awesome, so awesome. Remember how you played that cover of Eric Clapton's Layla?"
"I don't actually."
"Oh, well it was really good."
At this point my friend grabbed me by the arm and started tugging on it, trying to get me to leave before I started crying or hugged her or something.
"Well it was nice to meet you," Anya Marina said.
And as I walked away I said something like "I can't believe I just met Anya Marina, she did this cover of Layla it was so good."
Anyway... Anya Marina is playing TONIGHT at Humphrey's Backstage Lounge. I'm on her email list because we're best friends (yep, totally). Make sure you request Layla...
From Anya:
Why, hello, attractive human with a zest for life and a love for music!
Check this: My dear pal JIM BIANCO and I are playing TONIGHT--YES, TONIGHT--at Humphrey's Backstage Lounge in lovely Pt. Loma. (I apologize for this late breaking news, but well, it's been a rough couple of weeks in Southern Californiam and we're a tad discombobulated.)
So, gather yourself, your co-workers, your lovers, frenemies, and compatriots and join us for an evening of what is sure to be described tomorrow as "a swashbuckling good time."
If you've never experienced the handsome devil that is JIM BIANCO, you're in for a treat. (By the way, feel good while you get your troubadour on tonight, since I'll be donating all my proceeds from this show to the American Red Cross Fire Relief Fund.)
