Just When I Thought I was Getting the Hang of This Football Thing

The Union Tribune goes with this Headline: Chargers fall back to .500 with loss to Jags

What the hell does that mean?

Apparently the chargers lost 24-17 on Sunday and that somehow made them fall back to a .500 (their batting average? yeah, yeah, it's FOOTBALL).

Jacksonville (7-3) scored on its first three possessions, possibly taking advantage of what would have been an 10 a.m. start on the West Coast, and the Chargers (5-5) self-destructed on nearly every drive.

I like how we assume the Chargers couldn't handle playing as early as 10am! My goodness, why you gotta rush us Jacksonville? Don't you get we're on San Diego beach time here?

I actually did watch (most) of The Chargers game yesterday

Because that's what good daughters do with their Dads.

When I got there they were ahead (twenty-something to nothing, NOTHING) and apparently that was no big deal because Bob Costas asked some man during half time "If they keep this up and get this win will it make a difference to the outcome of their season?" And the little man said "No." Then they laughed.

Bob Costas, you are on my list.

Anyway (another reason I'm not a sports writer) something happened and some guy dropped the ball in the "End Zone" and then some other guy picked it up and he happened to be on the other team and then the other team scored. And then they went for a two point conversion and that didn't work out. The poor Chargers were watching their lead slip away.

And then luck stepped in and beat The Chargers with the "oh my God you guys get it together" stick:

The San Diego Chargers built a 23-point first-half lead and just held on to beat the Indianapolis Colts 23-21 when Adam Vinatieri missed a 29-yard field goal with 91 seconds to play.
It was only the second time in his career that Vinatieri has missed a field goal under 30 yards in the fourth quarter.

All in all a pretty good game, if you like that sort of thing. The announcers were all about Peyton Manning, whoever that is.

We need to get us a Sports Writer

Suddenly dawns on me that I skip over all that "sports stuff" in my diehard nitty gritty re-reporting of news. And here I am at home visiting my parents where I spend Sunday and Monday night watching football when I think "hey, we do have sports that go on in San Diego, don't we?"

I must admitt I go to games for mostly beer and hot dogs, but I'm sure there are people out there curious about the San Diego Sportsy scene. Hence my attempt. My I present to you "the reason why the Chragers had such a sucky game the other day" from MSNBC.

The Chargers were without three key defensive starters by the time Peterson rounded right end for his 64-yard touchdown with 12 minutes, 55 seconds left in the third quarter.

"Adrian is outstanding, but we thought we could handle him, and we did in the first half," said Chargers defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who held the same position with the Vikings in 2004-05. "What happened in the second half is Castillo got hurt. That really hurt us."
