December is all About Lists: Lights, lights and more lights

If December is all about lists then the lists should be all about lights. Nothing screams holiday like a boat load of lights and a boat load of lights screams "hey, we're cooler than you are because we went to Walmart and bought a boat load of lights to make you love the Holiday cheer. And I love it.

San Diego is pretty special because not only does it go all out with festival of lights and lighting festivals, but Christmas Lights are strung up along freeway bridges on the 805, and everyone (neighborhoods) get in to the spirit. With out further ado I give you the five places you can find the best Christmas Lights in San Diego.

Mostly because it's a Christmas Festival happening this weekend in Point Loma. They have a place for you to view Christmas Trees, lights, lights and SNOW. Yep, this time of year is all about importing the snow for the San Dieagans, who bust out their hats and mittens and promptly strip them off once they are done with snow hill. Beginning Friday 4:00pm - 9:00pm. Saturday 10:00am - 6:00pm. Ooo, FREE.

4. Garden of Lights at the Qual Botanical Gardens.

We'll let the website speak for the event: December 7-9, 13-23, 26-30 from 5 to 9 pm. After the sun goes down, the Gardens are transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland with over 90,000 sparkling lights illuminating the Gardens for a magical holiday experience. Many of these lights are LED, which are much brighter than regular lights. Numerous activities include horse-drawn-wagon rides, holiday crafts, marshmallow roasting, visits with Santa, live music, hot mulled wine, and refreshments. Admission: Members, Seniors, Military & Students $6; non-members $10. Children 3 12 $3.

Lori and I hit up the Wild Animal Park for some good Christmas Fun a few years ago and it was nice. We busted out the hats, scarves (but not short skirts and/or tank tops) and headed on out for a late afternoon, early evening jaunt to The Wild Animal Park. There were plenty of lights and even some hot chocolate, but even better was the feeling. As we left we took some time to stand underneath the fake snow dropping entry way. It's winter (kind of) and San Diego does it well. December 7–23 and December 26–30, 2007.

December Nights might not necessarily be all about Christmas Lights but it does provide for that general Christmas/ Christmas Light feeling. What with the food, fun, festivities, Santa Claus, kids singing, displays and FREE MUSEUMS, you can help but relish in the Christmas Lights atmosphere.

1. Some Neighborhoods go crazy for Christmas

I know of two, both of which I take a good evening to see, leer at and drink hot chocolate while I walk around them to check out the displays outside of people's homes. In the Clairemont Area you can check out Lana Drive off of Mt. Abernathy (which is off of Balboa Ave.). The entire neighborhood gets in to the spirit, and often times you'll find people sitting outside of their homes greeting you with a hearty "Merry Christmas!" Stop by The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf of Balboa Avenue (located next to Vons) and grab yourself a hot holiday drink, then enjoy the stroll. (Don't just do a drive by, often times people have music!).

Also, in Chula Vista, Cagayan Avenue off of Beyer Blvd. I was once lucky enough to know someone who lived there, we spent the better part of one evening decorating because his was the only house on the street without lights up. After wrapping a palm tree in hundreds of lights, putting up a singing Santa Claus and draping white lights wherever there was room, I was ready for a quick jaunt around to spot the competition. There was no contest, they win. I mean an actual train that plays Jingle Bells while making it's way around the entire house... wow.
