San Diego City Beat: They've got the best of the best

San Diego City Beat has put up their annual "Best of List" which is pretty random but is also a gret list of "things I will totally get to one day I swear, so that I too can be as cool as those cats over at City Beat."

A few (there are MANY more trust me) are below.

Suck it Snowboarders!

Best photo-op to make the snowbound jealous
Obviously picking just one gorgeous backdrop in San Diego is a fool’s errand. But with a full network of friends and family inexplicably dispersed throughout the colder climates of the world, I can say with some authority that nothing drives them quite as crazy as a great dead-of-winter picture capturing the sun, surf, sand and cliffs of Torrey Pines State Beach. The only Southern California cliché that’s missing is Marilyn Monroe.
—Lucas O’Connor

And suck it muscles! It's not like I need you any way!

Best trail that’ll kick your ass
The song “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor might help your stamina through the first mile of the Big Rock Park trail at Cowles Mountain at Navajo Road and Golfcrest Drive, but ultimately, the rough terrain and uphill climb might leave even Rocky Balboa wincing in pain. The trail’s path is, for the most part, narrow, making a Saturday run probably not a good idea—sharing the path with other people adds an element of difficulty. But, if you make it to the top, do a celebratory dance and then obey the sign that points out various city landmarks, like the SeaWorld Tower.
—Sheena Hamilton

Or Best Place to Spot Babes (the kind that giggle and drool not the kind that giggle and wear itty bitty tank tops and scarves during the winter).

Best, and strangest, playground
Playgrounds today just aren’t of the same quality as those we enjoyed while growing up. Most of the unique wooden structures we remember from our youths have since been replaced by lifeless, factory-made plastic structures—dull towers that make little attempt to stimulate the minds of children. Queen Califia’s Magical Circle, in Escondido’s Kit Carson Park, is the county’s most obvious exception. While the lack of climbing structures and its official designation as a “sculpture garden” might make the “playground” title debatable, there’s no denying that the average child (not to mention the atypical adult) will find plenty of stimuli for the imagination. Built by French artist Niki De Saint Phalle, in a style that mimics Mexican folk art, the almost-psychedelic garden features a black-and-white maze, a variety of trippy totem poles, an outer wall shaped like a series of giant snakes and at least 50 great hide-and-seek spots.

Best Rock Formation PERIOD is Transfer (get it, cause they are a ROCK band?)!

Best random rock formation
No collagen injection needed—the plumpest lips this side of La Jolla rest on the bottom of a hill in what is technically La Mesa. Often referred to as “the lips in Lemon Grove” (and not La Mesa), the Revlon-red kisser is a natural rock formation, welcoming those exiting Lemon Grove Avenue from the 94 freeway with a smile. In 1977, an artist and Lemon Grove resident coated the oval-shaped rock with a layer of ruby-red paint. Thirty years later, the rock’s rouge is still maintained by local volunteers, making it the best-kept lips aside from The Rolling Stones’ famous logo.
—Sheena Hamilton

Resisting urge to make a joke about your Mom. Resisting urge, resisting... (not like your Mom ever does, OH SNAP! Frick...)

Best muffins
If you’ve been searching all over for the best muffin in town like I know you have, look no further than independently owned Mystic Mocha (2105 Mission Ave.) in University Heights. The muffins—as well as the other pastries—are all made on site, and they kick ass. Let me say that again: They kick ass! They’re huge, those Mystic Mocha muffins, which is key if it’s going to be your one dietary splurge before putting in three hours on the elliptical. But more important, they’re not dry and sand papery like the kind you get at that one big coffee chain. These homemade muffins are moist, not too sweet and packed with chunks of fresh fruit; my personal favorite includes big, fat blackberries. Simply biting into one of these confections causes the kind of involuntary groan that is probably prohibited in public. Be warned, though: The muffins sell out quickly. If you roll up at 10 a.m. and think you’re going to have yourself some fresh-baked divinity, you’re likely to find yourself staring at a cake holder with nothing but crumbs.
—Aaryn Belfer

Oh my GOD someone is BEGGING me to make ANOTHER your Mom joke.

Best lobster tacos
Not every plate at Las Olas (2655 Highway 101, Cardiff by the Sea) is perfect, but there’s a reason folks wait hours to get into this eatery: the lobster tacos. Every year from October to March, California and Baja coastal fishermen pluck these spiny critters from the bottom of the Pacific for the enjoyment of coastal diners around the world. With its beachside views and festive atmosphere (the bar is a great place to plop on a weekday), Las Olas is worth the North County commute to grab lobster in the winter. The lines can be ridiculous, of course—don’t even bother showing up after 5:30 p.m. on a weekend—but arrive any time on a weekday and order up a house margarita with salt for the best end to your work day. The lobster plates come with a choice of a half or full crustacean, tortillas, all the taco fixings and a cup of rich yogurt salsa. The prices are usually right below or right at market value, and the bartenders don’t skimp on the tequila in the margaritas. There’s a new location in Carlsbad, but the Cardiff shop is the true original.
—Caley Cook

They are SETTING ME UP I swear... RESISTING!!!

Best place to smoke and drink coffee and appreciate tikis
Of all the coffee houses I go to, I like Java Jungle (5047 Newport Ave., Ocean Beach) the best. First of all, it’s not even in a building. Java Jungle is the absence of a building. It is sandwiched on a lot on Newport Avenue between a restaurant and a surf shop. Half the space is covered by a heavy-duty canopy; the rest is uncovered, giving it an outdoorsy feeling. It’s decked out with plants and palms and fountains and tiki lamps—the whole place is just bitchin’. The coffee is as good as any I’ve had, and you can smoke while you drink it, for crying out loud. Smoking, and coffee-drinking, and tiki-jungle-ambience-appreciating—it’s to die for.
—Edwin Decker

Everybody's talking about this place.

Best late-night joint
Burgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs, veggie dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, bacon and cheese omelets—Commonwealth Café (3408 30th St. in North Park) serves up simplicity and strives, with pride, to be an old-fashioned after-hours diner. I’d say the place just about has it down. Ice water is served in kitschy red plastic cups, food comes in plastic baskets and a weird medieval photo of two knights in battle hangs awkwardly in the bathroom. But, the napkin dispensers are still shiny silver, the counter—a fantastical creation made of hundreds of pennies frozen forever in a thick layer of clear resign—is without a scratch and the staff is far too good-looking, young and cool to be working in a tried-and-true greasy spoon (and it won’t truly be late-night until it’s allowed to stay open past midnight). The food lacks any real greasy drippings, although the Blue Fries—a pile of home-cut fries barely visible through all the white cream of chunky blue-cheese dressing—are a step in the right direction. But it isn’t what Commonwealth wants to be that makes it the best late-night dining shack in San Diego; it’s what it is right now—cheap, easy and fun, just how I like my after-hours companions.
—Kinsee Morlan

Also known as Best Place Where I'll be Walking Around acting totally like I have no idea who that guy over there is while I follow him around Whole Foods.

Best place to see a celebrity who’s also your neighbor
The place: Hillcrest. The celebrity: Rob Halford of Judas Priest. So freakin’ cool. The only drawback is that he’s almost never wearing leather.
—David Rolland

HA- Best Place to Find a Dead Body, City Beat does my work for me.

Best freeway to hang out under
As a rather well-curved and freeway-centered city, San Diego has no shortage of massive bridges and overpasses for us aspiring hobos to sit around and get philosophical beneath. The most impressive is the stretch of 805 that passes over Mission Valley and the 8 freeway. Accompanied by a wide spread of off- and on-ramps and frighteningly huge support pillars, the structure is straight out of some cynical futuristic sci-fi movie. An added bonus is that parking is remarkably easy—the lot for the Dave and Busters arcade is, after all, under the same bridge. Easily frightened explorers should be warned, however, as the muddy riverbank adjacent to the area can be somewhat scary—a potential winner for “Best Place to Find a Dead Body.”

Been there, bought some white lace gloves cause I was CONVINCED that they were on their way back in style (any day no, any day).

Best clothing store for aspiring hipsters
My theory as to why Hillcrest lies at the center of San Diego’s growing hipster community: It’s the easiest place to find the loud and/or “ironic” clothes that seem to define the movement. Local chain Flashbacks has its strongest outlet in the neighborhood, placing an emphasis on tacky, bright, 1970s-style outfits and other appealingly out-of-date fashions. Admittedly, the prices feel a little high for used clothing—but after all, only a truly cool starving-artist type would be able to call the $10 to $20 range “expensive.” The local Buffalo Exchange has a slightly more practical selection—a good range of pants, sweaters, and “so-bad-it’s-good” T-shirts, sure to make you the envy of all your not-quite-as-hip-as-you friends. The best thing about the two stores? They are, literally, right across the street from each other, located at 3847 and 3862 Fifth Avenue.
—Ben Greenstein

Cookies are a sometimes food!

Best place to achieve cookie nirvana
If Hollywood had anything to do with it, the best cookies in the world would come from a life-size gingerbread house, served by a pink-cheeked granny with a matronly bosom and a flour-speckled apron. But this is reality, folks, and here the best cookies in the world come from a utilitarian kitchen-with-a-cash register in tiny strip mall in Hillcrest, served by a dude in a baseball cap. Uncle Biff’s California Killer Cookies (650 University Ave., 619-291-2433) has been satiating San Diego’s sweet teeth for the past 18 years, though I only recently discovered them when my roommate started coming home once a week in a cookie-binge euphoria, trailing still-warm white-chocolate-macadamia crumbles behind her. The shop is a no-frills cookie factory, with Costco-size bags of walnuts, giant tubs of Skippy and sacks of all-purpose flour stacked randomly about. Biff’s gets away with the casual display because the cookies are like crack. Warm, moist, simple, sublime—the essence of everything a cookie has ever aspired to be. You can pick ’em out one by one for $1.50 a pop, get a half-dozen for $8.50 or a baker’s dozen for $18, or get any order over $8 delivered to your door. In that case, make sure you’ve got some milk at home. You’re going to need it.
—Kia Momtazi

I beg to differ.

Best San Diego band, period
Three glorious words: Grand Ole Party (www.myspace.com/grandoleparty).

I just made a really bad Hollaback Girl reference for Gwen Stefani but I'm still gonna make fun of these guys

In 2004 Will Ferrell made this diddy of a movie and based it in San Diego. Apparently San Diego was a glutton for a San Diego movie starring a sometimes funny comedian with a penchant for films about guys who think they are super cool but aren't that cool but end up being a bit cooler toward the end of the movie. The point is, in that movie Will Ferrell told us to "Stay Classy."

Yeah, yeah, stay classy San Diego, stay classy.

And then every dude trying to make a cute joke about San Diego decided to tell San Diego to keep there classy-ness.

Including these guys.

Oh yes, and this Halloween stay safe (and classy) San Diego.

Number 2...

So, we actually got a comment from a reader today! (Woo... go readers, leaving comments) and it says this:

you need to get out of P.B. more. this is the most boring piece of poop I have ever read.
-Anonymous

Congratulations anonymous on being mysandiegoblog's first public comment! Tell your friends!

*posting is not intended to goad anonymous. Editors acknowledge we are PB heavy in our best of San Diego answers, but it's mostly because we lived in PB and think that it is high time PB have a reputation for some good neighborhood joints (besides the ones that involve a college kid throwing up in the back, or an overly dressed up 40 year old hitting on said college kid). We encourage anonymous to submit his/her own best of San Diego list, and we'll publish it. Yep, we will. Join the poop anonymous... give us your best #2! (submissions are excepted from those who are other than anonymous as well... FYI other people).

Part III: Everything Turquoise AGAIN

Bars & Nightlife

Best Beach Bar : The Turquoise (it’s NEAR the beach, sheesh)

Best College Bar : Man, when was the last time I went to a college bar. I guess PB Bar and Grill, there seems to be a lot of college goers there.

Best Dance Club : Actually, I quite like The 5th Quarter, which I think is now called Whiskey Girl? Something like that. They have a good stage to lounge and dance on, yeah, this one time… (well anyway, they also play Bon Jovi sometimes, COME ON! Who could ask for anything more?)

Best Neighborhood Bar: The Turquoise (AKA Café Bar Europa). It single handedly MAKES North PB THE neighborhood to live in.

Best Downtown Bar : Pretty soon there’ll be a Turquoise down there (so I’ve heard). I won’t go there, but still.

Best Gay/Lesbian Bar : I’ve only ever been to The Brass Rail… latin night… loved it…

Best Happy Hour: (Well the hour I had with your Mom last… stop it, just stop it) Man I gotta call my friend Vanessa, she would totally know the answer to this one.

Best North County Bar : And she’d know the answer to this one too.

Best Brewery : And probably this one too

Best Pub : The Blarneystone, Clairemont Shopping Center (next to Vons). Seriously, a pub in a shopping center and it’s actually REALLY fun (especially when they start peer pressuring you to down your drink).

Best Pick-up spot : The West End, tail end of Turquoise Street. Trust me. Ripe, for, the picking…

Best Upscale Bar: The Turquoise… it’s every kind of bar.

Best Cocktails: The Turquoise has this one martini called The Turquoise.. RULES.

Best Dive Bar: The West End (it’s DIVE man… but worth it)

Part II: If I leave it blank it means I don’t want to play favorites with all my favorite classical music groups and all ages venues…

Arts, Music, Movie

Best Art Museum: Museum of Contemporary Art Downtown BECAUSE that’s the first place Lori and I ever saw Transfer play (Thursday Night Thing, GO THERE). But if we’re not considering Transfer in the answering of all questions (and how could we not?!) then I’m going to say the Art Institute of San Diego Museum, there are some talented folks studying round these parts.

Best Non-art Museum : Oh man do I want to write the Museum of your Mom, but I’m going to be serious and go with the Natural History Museum.

Best Museum for Kids Natural History Museum... and I’m not just saying that because it’s really the only Museum I’ve been to that’s not an art museum.

Best Movie Theater It’s definitely the one at Mission Valley Center, and not because it provides for the best movie experience but because seriously most of the times I went there it provided for the best ENTERTAINMENT experience. Take the time I saw a guy bitch slap this teenage kid for kicking the back of his seat and insulting his girlfriend. Plus the kid had been periodically throwing AOL CD’s at the screen and giggling about it. So when he got all bitch slapped by some 40 year old guy the entire theatre started CLAPPING while the teenage kids went whining out of the theatre with their cell phones out. “Yeah, call Daddy for your ride home” someone yelled. That was the ONLY thing that made watching “The Grudge” bearable. So maybe it should be nominated for “Best Movie Theatre to watch a not so great remake of a Japanese Horror Movie.”

Best Local Club for Live Music : Ima gonna go with The Casbah. Sheesh, no brainer.

Best Large Concert Venue : I like Viejas, but I don’t know if that’s quite “large” enough.

Best Music Store : So I download…

Part 1: (Yes, there's parts!) Everything Turquoise...

Man that took a while. But as I’m sure you’ve been on the edge of your seat wondering WHEN I was going to tell you my picks for the Union Tribune’s Reader’s Poll: Best of San Diego… here goes.

RESTAURANTS

Best Romantic : The Coronado one my now husband took me to on our first date. It over looks downtown San Diego and makes chocolate lava cake that puts you into such a chocolate fantasy haze you go out and marry the guy four months later. Alright, one Google search and confirmation with my husband later: Peohe’s
Best Italian : Rafaela’s (and we will soon feature Rafaela’s all on its own).
Best Chinese : Panda Country Restaurant on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. (Go North Clairemont!) It got to the point that I’d go in there during lunch and the owner lady would go “orange chicken?” Yeah lady, orange chicken.
Best Mexican : Jesus Christ it’s San Diego, it’s all good Mexican Food. The best is Cotixan’s on Genesee.
Best Seafood :
Best Thai : There’s this one place, it’s on Convoy street. I think it’s called Thai Palace. But you really can’t go wrong heading to Convoy Street for the good Asian eats. Like they have this one spicy Chinese restaurant, which by the way, is SPICY (so warned).
Best Pizza : Pizza Chicago Pacific Beach and not just because we sat out on the deck, drank a gallon of beer and ended up passing out on the beach for two hours after that.
Best Vegetarian Menu : That would be, Spread? Is that the name of it??? Lori and I went there once and if that actually IS the name of it I totally missed an opportunity to make very lewd jokes while at dinner.
Best Steaks: Lori doesn’t eat red meat and the rest of the time I lived in SD I was on a writer’s salary.
Best Brunch Lips, Gospel Brunch… not the food but the all you can drink mimosa’s and hot Drag Queens…
Best Budget Dining : The Café Bar Europa
Best Late-night Dining : The Café Bar Europa
Best Family Dining : at your mom’s house. I’m sorry, the joke was bound to work its way in there at some point and gimme some credit this is TAME by industry standards (the industry of bad your mom jokes that is). Perhaps the family dining at your Mom’s house really is the best… I know your Mom was last night (sorry I did it again, forgive me).
Best Hotel Restaurant : The Marriott in Coronado has a good restaurant buffet that’s outdoors and everything. Great views of downtown San Diego too.
Best Coffee Shop Café 976 on Cass Street. Take dates there, you know the ones that insist on the “I want to have coffee and see if you’re worth a real date” dates, because it’s pretty there and because then you can make them buy you nicely priced good food… so there we’re actually on a REAL DATE any way! (And girls, tip, don’t keep dating that guy. Find the guy that really DATES you… it does happen.)
Best Fine Dining : WRITERS salary
Best Dessert : That could quite possibly be the chocolate lava cake I mentioned before. However, Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy and Hillcrest, that’s an experience. Though it kind of looks like Ikea sponsored the one downtown… man… is that some good cake.
Best Catering : The last party I had catered was done by Vanessa, she’s excellent. You should hire her for sure (except she’s mine!)
Best French: The French Gourmet, also best croissants, best chocolate croissants, best am and cheese croissants, best shortbread cookies (they also made my wedding cake which was the best). Man I miss San Diego eating.
Best Japanese/Sushi Surprisingly there is a Sushi place in this little shopping center across the street from the original Rubio’s on Mission Bay Drive, however I DO NOT know the name. I typed it in to Google and came up with Sushi Ota. A beautiful Japanese gal (my technical step mother in law) took me there. So it got that stamp of approval. You really can’t judge a book by its cover as it is located right next to a 7-11 and across the street from my old gynecologists office (seriously!). When my husband and I showed up he immediately said something like “what is my Dad thinking?! We can go get something else after this if you want.” But, ya burnt Husband! as the sushi was very good.
Best New Restaurant : I haven’t been back in a year… oh god I’m gonna cry.
Best Buffet : Writer’s Salary so I never had the chance to experience the buffet at the Hotel Del, but I’ve heard rumblings that it’s pretty darn good.
Best Tapas That would be Café Bar Europa or “The Turquoise.” (Look, we used to hang there all the time. The bartenders are hilarious and low key, the chef is friendly and likes to experiment with this choices for the menu, the menu is reasonably priced, the atmosphere is excellent, the live music rocks, and the owner is hilarious. I took first dates there, had birthday parties there (they provided pink balloons!), celebrated holidays (really important ones like Mardi Gras), did my engagement dinner and wedding reception there… I’m not trying to give away the secret to a good time in San Diego (because at one point word of mouth got around and the place got SO popular on Friday and Saturday night, I stopped going for fear of being rubbed down by one of the many sweaty bar guys you usually only find in downtown PB. This bar/ restaurant/ café RULES).
Best Indian That would be Café Bar… okay just kidding. Never really did the Indian food thing.
Best Greek A big fat question mark from yours truly.
Best Breakfast The Mission in Mission Beach. Rosemary Potatoes…

End of part I. Will work on the next segment. Sheesh, Sign on San Diego sure does expect a lot from their readers!

Just another enabler: Best of San Diego 2007

Nobody wants me to nominate in Sign On San Diego’s Best of poll. Was just trying to do it here but it turns out that you need to “enable” cookies on your computer to do it. The website shook its finger at me and said “go enable your cookies and try again.”

Man, pushy website. SOOOO sorry that my cookies aren’t enabled enough for you. I try to live my life not being an enabler… hello co-dependency. All of a sudden cookies are sitting on a dirty couch in the crack den demanding to be included in every website search “gimme my search, give it to me! I need it!”

Anyway, like I said, I’m trying to participate in the nominations as if I’m some sort of expert on the Best Pick Up Spot (in case you’re wondering I’m gonna go with The West End on Turquoise Street because this one time…) I am however keenly aware of the Best Local Band (that would be THESE GUYS). The more you read, the more you will understand how obsessed Lori and I were/ are with Transfer. By the way, they love me.

Will work on my nominations and let you know. I'll probably post them later. Maybe you can be total copy cats and vote the same as me…. peer pressure… everyone likes Transfer, everybody!

You can nominate The Best Of San Diego from September 13 – September 27 (enable your cookies!).
